Hello Hello!
I am glad you are here, but also I am very sorry because allergies SUCK! There is nothing worse than watching your child suffer and nothing more stressful than trying to navigate allergies without help and support. In my previous life, I was a consultant that had to travel 85% of the time and completely gave up on my own dietary wishes because it was too complicated to avoid dairy while eating out for every meal on the road because so many places and people in the food industry do not understand ingredients.
When my son was diagnosed with a milk allergy (i.e., he had an allergic reaction within the first couple of weeks of COVID quarantines and shutdowns in Spring 2020), it was so hard to find resources on how to prepare foods and find items that were safe. This wasn't like starting a diet where mistakes or passes could be made. We were supposed to give him baked milk items daily and could not find ANY recipes or resources for this). We could not give him anything with milk, butter, cheese, etc. (eggs were OK). The resources and recipes I found were most frequently for dairy allergies, which included eggs.
Then, came the pea allergy!
Then, came the sugar impacts!
How many times have you heard the following?
Me: "My son has a dairy allergy. Does this menu item have milk?"
Waiter: "No, it doesn't"
Me: "OK, so you don't cook the meat in butter, right?"
Waiter: "Yes, we do."
Me: "OK, butter IS made from milk, so he cannot have that"
Waiter: ::Blank Stare::
Or….
Me: "Remember that he is allergic to milk"
Grandparent: "OK, we will just get him some Lactaid"
Me: "He isn't lactose intolerant, he is allergic"
Grandparent: "Oh yeah… ok well we have plenty of other snacks like string-cheese, Goldfish, Muffins…."
Me: "He can't have any of that…."
I created this website because our son has a milk allergy in addition to a pea allergy, which really complicates the use of non-dairy substitutes because of the use of pea protein. We have been navigating this allergy successfully for the last year, and have been able to find a lot of great recipes and products that fit our needs.
I am NOT a chef. I am barely allowed in the kitchen. So, a lot of these products and tips are the easy things outside of a home-cooked meal that could include a protein, veggie & starch.
